On November 6th, Stephen Murray came into our school to talk to us about poetry. In my opinion, I don't like poetry. It wouldn't be my favourite aspect of the English course. I thought this was going to be a boring activity and he would teach us about rhyme for a poem. Thankfully, I was wrong. He started off by introducing himself. He told us about his own personal life. He told us about his love for poetry. Then, surprisingly, he told us that a poem doesn't need to rhyme. He showed us two videos. One was about bullying in school and the other one was about a boy who was talking about his personal experience but in a poem format. He then got us to do a few activities. The first activity was to think of things we would do to someone if they did something extremely bad to us but we had to exaggerate. The second activity was what we like and hate about girls and what we like and hate about boys. The third activity was to think of 5 sentences that start with 'I am' and contain at least 7 words.
Reflection
Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed the poetry slam. He was very funny and was very likeable. The only downside I had was that we didn't have enough time. Otherwise, I would love to see Stephen come to our school in the future. Below, I have included the poem that I submitted.
It was the morning,
Time to get up,
Places to go,
People to see.
Work needs to be done,
Things to do,
Animals to be fed,
Slurry to be spread.
The evening comes,
Work is done,
In we go,
Life is well.
