On September 14th, we all got onto the bus and left Portumna. It was a long journey for some as their celebrations went into the early hours of the morning.
Fr. Peter McVerry was the first speaker. He spoke about homelessness. He spoke about his own personal experiences and that we should simply say “hello” to the people sleeping on the streets. Dr. Cara Augustenborg was the second speaker. She is chairperson of Friends of the Earth. Her speech was all about climate change. John Lonergon was the third speaker. He spoke to us about community involvement and his work he done in prisons. Joanne O’ Riordan was the fourth, and final, speaker. She is the most inspirational person I have met and was the highlight of the day. She is one of seven people in the world that has no limbs. She told us about her documentary “No Limbs, No Limits” which I would highly recommend for everyone to watch, if you haven’t already. Joanne holds a special place in my heart as her speech was breath-taking.
Reflection:
When I heard Fr. Peter McVerry’s speech, I was a little bored to be honest. Then when Joanne made her speech, I completely thought different. I think she really hit everyone’s heart with her truly inspirational speech. I believe that our trip to knock was a wonderful experience I would consider going back.
